　　"What price freedom ?H criesthe senator．Well,most of us would nod and agree that freedom is，in fact，priceless．However，thatbegs the question of whether the$10 billion spent so far on Triton is a reasonableprice for freedom--or，more important．whether Triton represents freedom at all.
　　The senator，s emotional appeal is ared herring，pulling his listeners，attention away from the facts at hand．
　　The senator goes on to ask，“Would your tax dollarsreally be better spent propping up a variety of social programs than indefending our nation from the enemy abroad?”Here the senator presents hislisteners with a false diiemma-yon may have either social programs or defensebut not both．There is absolutely nothing to indicatethat if the Triton program were canceled today，itsfunding would switch over to support Medicare or housing in the inner cities．The only reason to present such a dichotomy is to sow confusion andfear.
　　The senator concludes with thesuggestion that to stop the Drogram now would be to throw$10 billion “down thedrain．” Thisis a very common argument from Washington and our state capital．However, Just as two wrongs don’t tmake a right I so throwing goodmoney after bad doesn’t correct a situation that is possibly wrongheaded tobegin with．
　　Instead of appealing to fear andridicule，thesenator would do better to present what he sees as the posltlye values ot theTriton Missile Program．What advances has the fundingprovided? What is the role of the program in our overal I defense? Can costs becontrolled and deadlines met? Standing up for his beloved program with factsand figures might prove more successful than covering up the program's faultswith swaggering，fallacious Obfuscation．
