In this essay, the writer embraces the postulate presented ,using examples to expand upon it.While acknowledging a possible counterargument ,the writer bases a strong support for the quotation on personal experience. There are no significant errors in grammar or mechanics.
I came to college,as many of us do,with the mistaken assumption that l would leave in four years “well rounded,”a once-empty vessel now filled to the brim with knowledge. After four years,to my chagrin I find that, like the speaker of these words,my formal education has done little but make me aware of my ignorance.
My chagrin derives from my assumption that it would be otherwise. In fact,I now believe that this is the essential role of formal education-to let us know all there is to know that is Just out of our reach, around the corner,in the future. It’s that understanding that changed me over four years from a scribbl ing note taker and semiplagiarist to a questioning f critical ,eager ,lifelong learner.
The quotation may seem too cynical to some. After all, haven't I learned things in my four years? Isn't formal education more valuable for what it imparts rather than for what it reveals? Yes and no.I have learned countless facts, read countless fine works of literature, and taken part in countless fascinating experiments.Yet for every fact,I realized how much more there was to know. For every great book,I recognized how many more there were yet to read. For every experiment that solved a problem,I was left with uncertainty about another problem that was raised by that experiment. It may sound frustrating, but for me,it was both enlightening and electrifying.I took to the academic life 1ike a duck to water, anticipating always another corner to turn, another philosophy to embrace, another question to ask.A good education, I believe leaves us with more questions than answers.“The relentless revelation of one’s own ignorance” is not a negative;it's an opportunity. If that were not so,if education were finite, what would we graduates have to look forward to?
